Bringing sport to children in refuges, with KidsOut

Together with the children's charity KidsOut, we have funded their first sports programme for children living in refuges: football training, rugby club memberships, swimming lessons and kit.

Each year, thousands of children in the UK arrive at a refuge with their families after fleeing domestic abuse. Many leave behind not just their home, but their school, their friends and the clubs and teams they belonged to.

KidsOut works with refuges across the country to bring some fun and normality back into those children's lives. With funding from the What Would Mia Do Trust, KidsOut has launched its first sports-based activities programme for children in refuge, paying for:

  • football training
  • rugby club memberships
  • swimming lessons
  • sports equipment

A refuge manager told KidsOut that sport "is such an amazing way of connecting with new people" for young people starting again somewhere new, and that "this support can literally change their lives."

This is exactly what the Trust was set up to do. Mia loved sport, and believed it should be for everyone, not just those who can afford it. Working with partners like KidsOut means we can reach young people who might never have heard of us, at a time when they need it most.
